Stroller Talk

OK, so everyone keeps talking about the stroller/car-seat combo, and I'd like to know why you think that's the best option. I saw them in the store, and they look like the dang Mars Rover, all huge and complicated. And it seems to me that it would be a drag to have to haul the car-seat in and out of the car all the time, rather than just leaving it hooked up in there. But I don't know anything about this stuff, so please offer me your words of wisdom, because if there is something about the combo that will make my life easier, I am all for that. Thanks!

There is the Graco stroller that you can use with the car seat in if while the baby is really small and the car seat just fits right on top of the stroller seat-(the bottom is for diaper bag and your stuff and as the baby gets bigger, she/he will fit in just the stroller part. Alexis has this model- it is very cool and all the Graco car seats fit in it so when I have her I don't have to switch out all the car seat bases and such- just use mine with their stroller.

I concur - when the baby is little, it is nice to have a carseat with a base that also can fit in the stroller. We had the Graco and it worked great. The biggest problem with the portable car seats in general is that as they get older, it gets pretty heavy. And you have to carry it in a bit of an awkward manner, so it doesn't take too long before you get tired of carying it it. Back/forth to the car is fine - but beyond that is a hassle. They also fit nicely into some shopping carts...but in some carts the baby sits too reclined...the blood would rush to their head.

Sorry -- I disagree with the above posts. (Although, admittedly, we didn't try the joint seat -- for the reasons you mention.)

(1) The resulting stroller is far too heavy and complicated -- throw yer back out, getting it in and out of the car.

(2) Jack of all trades, master of none. The designers had to add on to the car seat, beyond its basic functionality, to get it to mesh with the stroller. And vice-versa.

(3) Similar to other ''combo'' devices (e.g. cassette + CD players; VCR/DVD combos) -- if one part breaks, you gotta replace the whole thing.

(4) It's not **that** hard to carry the baby from the stroller to the car seat!!!

(5) BIGGEST REASON -- My favorite time is when I get to carry the baby from the stroller to the car seat, or vice-versa. Get to give a little hug, a little parental bonding. Interact with the kid a bit -- because what's the hurry? :) If you never touch the kid, just the plastic bucket, then I truly think people are missing out on some bonding experiences.

IMO. :)

combo is heavy but i liked it. Babies sleep alot and you don't want to get them in and out at every place you go. Great arm muscles come from powerlifting the carseat. You can get the lighter one after that.
